- A group of scientists, political figures and statesmen in Turkey have published a joint written statement to call on the General Assembly to hold a meeting in Ankara and make a claim to peace and democracy, by returning to capital Ankara, despite the prorogue .

“Declaring or ending a war or an armed clash with an organization cannot ground on the future political ambitions of a government or a person. These issues involve people, parties, and the whole nation, that go beyond political counts or expectations” said the statement, referring to the peace process as “personal ambitions of the person who has admitted the ruling party under its tutelage.”

Having warned that Turkey needs peace more than ever in the existing conjuncture, along with the blaze in the Middle East, the statement urged, “Terror cannot be excused and defended. However, suspending the democracy, attempts to close parties, detention of persons, blocking the way of operation of the assembly, foreclosing the political figures seen as standing in ways of personal aims cannot be approved either.”

The signatories of the joint statement called on the provisional government to abandon their language of tension, and end the environment of clash and war, in framework of law, conscience and common sense.

Some of the names who have signed the statement include author-economist Professor Mehmet Altan, author-sociologist Oya Baydar, Professor Murat Belge, Baskın Oran, jurist Orhan Kemal Cengiz.
