Smith's son Sawyer, 22, died on Monday evening in Norwalk, Connecticut, where he was a student at Norwalk Community College, reportedly said that the death was sudden and unexpected.

A report in The Ridgefield Press in Ridgefield, Connecticut quoted a spokeswoman at the state medical examiner’s office saying, “Cause of death at this time is pending further studies.” A toxicology report had been sought and it would probably be six to eight weeks before the results were returned.

Another son, Patrick, died of a bacterial infection during a family holiday in Spain in 2011. James Smith and his first wife Tammy have three other children - Sawyer’s older brothers Adam and Eric and his twin brother Lucas.
