Mecca, Sep 24 (DHA) - Saudi Arabia’s civil defense announced that 717 pilgrims have died while at least 805 others were injured, after a stampede broke out in the tent city of Mina, reported Al Arabiya News on Sep. 24.
The stampede has erupted at the entrance of the Jamarat Bridge near the Street 204, rather than inside the area where the stoning pillars were located, reporting from the Mina Emergency Hospital said.
“The injured have been distributed to four other hospitals in the Mina area. Some of the injured have been evacuated by helicopters to hospitals in Makkah city” reports announced.
Rescue operations continue
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims were taking part in the 'stoning of the devil', last major rite of the Hajj pilgrimage.
The civil defense teams have started to lead pilgrims to safer routes, away from the stampede, said the Civil Defense.
On-going rescue operations have been carried out in the region.
Footage from the scene show medical emergency teams trying to intervene injured people lying on the ground.
Accordingly, images shared on Twitter demonstrate that neighboring hospitals in the region have been preparing to open doors to injuries.
No death tolls recorded for Turkish pilgrims so far
Vice President of Religious Affairs Ekrem Keleş has made a press statement which declares that the Dirtorate has not been informed of any death reports regarding Turkish pilgrims from crisis centers in Turkish tent hospital in Mina, as from 12.10 a.m.
“We have been contacting groups, and our teams have been debriefing. We have not heard of any causalities yet, I can say for now” said Keleş.
