– In Maçka district in Black Sea province of Trabzon, Sumela Monestry attracts more than 400,000 domestic and foreigner visitors a year, according to Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

Having been constructed in the fourth century (375 - 395 B.C.), the building of Sumela Monastery is still a mystery for visitors, since reaching the area is highly difficult for people.

The historical monastery lies on a 270-meters-long gap reaching a level of 1,300 meters in height, thus plans are on the way to construct a telpher line reaching to the monument.

For a certain period, the monument has become a target for treasure hunters, and has suffered extensive damage after fires. Later on it had been restored into its recent look. In 2010, a religious ceremony has been performed for Assumption of Virgin Mary into heaven at the historical church.
