- Turkish fighter jets took off late July 28 to hit terrorist targets inside Turkey and across the border in northern Iraq as part of its week-long aerial campaign in the fight against terrorism.
Two Turkish F-16 fighter jets dropped bombs on at least three suspected “separatist terrorist organization” targets in southeastern Şırnak province on July 28, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement July 29.
Although the official statement did not specify the name of the group, it is believed the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) was the target. According to the statement, the jets struck two anti-aircraft gun positions and a mortar position in Düğün Mountain.
The Turkish General Staff said the action was taken following an attack on Turkish gendarmerie forces by suspected PKK members in Şırnak’s Uludere Karacali Tepe region. Security forces were in the process of carrying out a damage assessment in the aftermath of the airstrikes, the statement added.
