The Bangladeshi Embassy in Turkey will celebrate the country's 48th Independence and National Day on Tuesday in an official reception in the capital Ankara.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency on Monday, Ambassador M. Allama Siddiki said the day will mark the start of Bangladesh's nine-month long freedom movement on March 26, 1971.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag and some other government officials are also expected to attend the event, he added.

Siddiki added: "Unfortunately, the military of the then Pakistan started Operation Searchlight attacking the civilian population of Dhaka in the early hours on March 26, 1971. The people of Bangladesh began the war for self-defense and to liberate the country."

During Tuesday's event the embassy will unveil a book titled: "The unfinished memoirs of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman", Bangladesh's founding father.

“We hope that the people of Turkey, our brothers, will come to know more about Bangladesh with this book.”

A photo exhibition will also be organized at the event.
