Istanbul, May 5 (DHA) - The proportion of households living below the poverty threshold stood at 22.4 percent in 2014 in Turkey, according to the data released by Turkstat on Tuesday.
On the other hand, 28.9 percent of households with one adult with at least one dependent child lived below the relative poverty threshold calculated in 2013, said in the Turkstat statement on the Statistics on Family data.
Dependent child is defined as a child who is under the age of 25, economically inactive and living with at least one parent.
The poverty rate of households having dependent children at 27.2 percent was 3.5 times higher than that of households having no dependent children at 7.7 percent.
The poverty rate of households with two adults and three or more dependent children was at 49.6 percent in 2013, while the poverty rate of people aged 65 years or over living alone rose to 17.9 percent in 2013, up from 15.1 percent in 2009.
As the proportion of poverty of males at this household type and age group was 9.1 percent, this rate was 13.0 percent for females.
The province with the highest average size of households was Şırnak
The average size of households was 3.6 in 2014 as in 2013, while the province with the highest average size of households was Şırnak with 7.3 persons in 2014, followed by Hakkari with 6.6, Şanlıurfa and Batman with 6.1, Siirt with 6.0 persons, all eastern and southeastern provinces.
The province with the lowest average size of households was western province of Çanakkale with 2.7 persons, followed by Balıkesir and Eskişehir with 2.8 persons, Burdur and Edirne with 2.9 persons.
Households with single person increased to 8.9 percent
Proportion of households with single person was 8.6 percent in 2012 increased to 8.9 percent in 2013, the proportion of households with single parent family was 8.1 percent in 2012 increased to 8.2 percent in 2013, the proportion of households with three generations was 13.5 percent in 2012 decreased to 13.1 percent in 2013.
39.6 percent of divorces occurred in the first five years of marriage
The number of couples who got divorced increased 4.5 percent in 2014 according to previpus year and it was 130 thousand 913. The province having the highest crude divorce rate was Antalya with 2.87 per thousand in 2014. Antalya was followed by İzmir with 2.72 and Muğla with 2.53 per thousand. In 2014, 39.6 percent of divorces occurred in the first five years of marriage and 21.8 percent of them occurred in the marriages with the duration of 6-10 years.
Domestic violence against women affects children adversely
According to the 2014 survey results of Domestic Violence Against Women in Turkey, 2014 examining behavioral problems of 6-14 aged children of women who were exposed and not exposed to physical and/or sexual violence from spouse or partner; while 30.6 percent of children of women who were exposed to violence showed "Aggression to mother and other children", this proportion was 17.2 percent for children of women who were not exposed to domestic violence.
