Journalist Fined 5 Months Jail For Insulting Erdoğan

- A journalist, in southern Turkish city of Adana, is fined for 5-month jail for "insulting" President Tayyip Erdoğan, via Facebook sharings, in February 2014 when he was the Prime Minister.

The judge, fined Bekiroğlu for 5 months in jail but postponed the declaration of the judgement, which means she well be free until then.

Mine Bekiroğlu, a journalist working for a local newspaper, was detained by the cybercrime police on February 15 last year. She was set free after the police iquiry but her computer was siezed to examine.

She said, she had not meant to insult the (then) Prime Minister. "The words and centences I used on my Facebook sharing were not for insulting. I was criticising the Prime Minister" she said.

The prosecutor asked for jail fine upto 2 years for Bekiroğlu, in the indictment, based on "insulting and threatening" the Prime Minister. Ramazan Çırak, Erdoğan's lawyer and the regional head of the Erdoğan's Justice and Development Party, also attended the hearing.
