- Famous Portuguese fado singer Dulce Pontes will be at Istanbul’s İş Sanat on April 3. Pontes performs in many musical genres such as pop, folk and classical and her songs helped contribute to the 1990s revival of a style of Portuguese urban folk music called fado.
Born in 1969 in Lisbon, Pontes won the national music festival with her song “Lusitana Paixao” (Tell Me), which led her to representing Portugal at the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest.
She finished eighth in the competition, which is to date the fourth-best finish for a Portuguese performer.
One of her most well-known songs is her interpretation of “Cançao do Mar” (Song of the Sea), which was later recorded by Sarah Brightman under the name “Harem,” and became an international hit in 2003.
Pontes has collaborated with names like Cesaria Evora, George Dalaras, Andrea Bocelli and others.
In 2009, Pontes released “Momentos,” a career-spanning double-disc collection that included previously unreleased tracks.
