- UN was against arms shipment to any of the warring sides in Syria, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said, at a press briefing on Tuesday.

Turkey disclosed no information regarding Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MİT) trucks, which were stopped by gendarmerie troops in January 2014 whilst carrying weapons on route to Syria, he added.

“The fundamental principle of the secretary-general is definite. The UN supports peace-oriented acts for resolution of the conflict in Syria. The UN is against arms shipment to any of the warring sides in Syria."

The disclosure of the footage had sparked widespread outrage against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and President Tayyip Erdoğan, who had long denied that there were any weapons on board to extremist groups, instead stating that the trucks were loaded with aid to Turkmens.

The published video, which the daily claims was in the public prosecutor’s case file, depicts a search of a truck. Upon initially opening the case of the truck, the authorities find a layer of cardboard boxes containing medicine.

Beneath the boxes of medicine however, is a staggering collection of ammunition. All in all, Cumhuriyet claimed there were 1,000 mortars, 1,000 artillery shells, 50,000 assault rifle rounds and 30,000 heavy machine gun rounds in the truck.

In the aftermath President Erdoğan has demanded that Cumhuriyet daily Editor-in-Chief Can Dündar be jailed for life on espionage and terrorism.
